If they were using a new technique of adaptive optics, then that would indeed be on a need to know basis...
The adaptive optics used by the major scopes in the world today were developed in secret by the military... only when the technique was developed by civilian agencies did the military declassify it....
Do you have any doubt that they kept advancing imaging capabilities? And that those advancements would be highly guarded secrets?
