Ice and damage

If ice did form on the water dump outlets, without restricting the flow, it may not have been noticed. But how do we get from an ice formation to damage to the tiles? Perhaps there was a long spike of ice sticking out and breaking off during the initial atmospheric encounter swinging down at high rate and damaging many tiles. Lots of possibilities. Is it possible to know for sure?
