That first flight was really something. For all the research they had done, they were testing a lot of things for the very first time with that launch.
I also remember the crew getting out and running all around the Columbia, checking tires, tiles, and pretty much everything. That flight did have ejection seats, although at Mach 18 they would have been utterly worthless.
