This concept got a lot of play in Max Hunter's book "Thrust Into Space." Gary and I did a lot of numbers back in the early 80s on gas-core systems, and they looked real good. Most of our designs were much smaller...the idea was to make runabouts, not battle cruisers. Of course, a lot would have depended on how small you could make a gas core reactor.
