The advantage of cross range capability for a lifeboat...

is that it allows you to reenter quicker in an emergency. That could be very significant in a medical emergency. Without cross range capability, you could find yourself having to wait for up to several revs before being in a position to perform a safe reentry. Most of the world in covered with water and a substancial fraction of the land mass isn't exactly "nice" either. Dropping a crew, especially an injuried one, into the middle of a cold ocean or a jungle isn't exactly a nice thing to do. Even if they survive the reentry, it could take many hours for rescue personnel to reach them. A good cross range capability gets you into position for a safe landing a lot quicker.
