Space/Science » in reply to Adam, what is the difference between fusion and fission? n/t

One is real, the other a dream?

Hi

Fusion is always 25 - 50 years away.

Fission is here, now.

If we reprocessed "waste" we could extend the lifetime of our fissiles immensely. Current reserves are about 300 terawatt years worth - just 20 years worth of global energy use.

But with reprocessing that becomes 11,000 TW/years. The nuclear non-proliferation policies from the 70s were a short-sighted waste that has bequeathed us with radioactive "waste" that could be recycled and recycled...

Adam

PS To get rid of the "waste" we need to extract the plutonium. And then we can "burn" the rest up with proton beams to create short life-time radioactives.
