Intrinsic radiation on the Martian surface
Much is discussed about incoming solar and cosmic radiation to Mars, but what about intrinsic radiation stored in soils and rocks? How "radioactive" would these materials be? What kind of threat to humans would they pose? Breathing radioactive dust particles would be a severe deterent to any human exploration. As experience with the Apollo moonwalkers showed, fine-grain dust got in everywhere.
