The people who turned the tide against slavery upset quite a few people's sensibilities along the way. It takes conviction and a willingness to be unpopular to make big changes. It's also the path to fanaticism. It's one of those tough balancing acts which it is why it is often hard for people to tell the difference between fanatics and visionaries. Both have been mislabeled as the other at one time only to have history judge otherwise.
