As Sam is probably well aware of, the tectonic upheavals were vibrations in the Third Etheral Plane of Quasi-Sentience. Also known as the Dimension of Atrophic Grey Matter.
Only those in tune with these subtle, hidden and very special vibrations were able to feel the terrible upheavals. But only those pure and spiritual enough can detect them.

This is to say, only the enlightened can understand and apprehend, the rest of us must have faith.
