I recently had a conversation with my next-door neighbor about refridgeration systems. He installs and services AC units. My AC in my little Chevy Cavalier has been dead for about 4 years. My wife has been bugging me to get it fixed, so I thought I'd talk to my neighbor Gary about it. I was surprised to find out that it is a closed system and the refridgeration does not go bad. Therefore if you have no leaks you never need to replace the refridgerant. If that's the case whats the big deal? Just driving around with the AC on does nothing to the environment, since it all stays in a closed system. If its the loss of refridgerant when you get a small leak in the system, I submit that there is not enough leaking to be worth all the effort.
Unfortunatly for me, Gary didn't have the hoses to hook into 134a since he services house units not car units. The older cars had the same fittings whether it be house or car.
