The environmentalist whackos will respond that the AC fluid escapes when the car or refrigerator is wrecked for recycling.
The real reason is that they hate big cars, hate cars with air conditioning, hate the fact that humans are comfortable when they should be suffering, and really, really hate human beings in general.
They are currently working hard to make sure that all possible substitutes for freon are made impractical or unusable for other environmental reasons.
