Seeing through the overhead does not allow seeing through the baggage, and placing my small "stuff" bag under my seat is convenient. I agree that a number of "recesses and crannies" can and should be eliminated, but this will not solve the primary issue. The threat is from the human animal that boarded my plane, not his baggage. Eliminate the criminal eliminates the crime.
