Jerry Falwell apparently popped up with a thesis that one reason we were hit by terrorists was that, basically, God was mad at us. The only transcript I can find for this is from People for the American Way--not exactly unbiased--but I assume it's accurate.

This nutty idea that this is a "punishment" from God was immediately trashed by most other conservatives, including the Wall Street Journal and Worldnet Daily, which runs a column from Falwell. Falwell has issued a somewhat lame apology.

Of course, if we were logical about this "Wrath of God" theory, wouldn't the planes have hit ACLU headquarters, gay bars or abortion clinics? Cripes. Sometimes the loonies that are theoretically on your side just make you want to put a bag over your head.

Just so you know that it's not just the left spouting off.
