Future Shock
Steve Wasserman's Sunday Book Review in the LA Times is always worthwhile, and this week's edition is particularly timely and relevant:
Future Shock Why History Refuses to Give America a Reprieve from the Reality It Helped Create
Reviewed here are recent works on the Taliban, Blowback, Afghanistan and terrorism, and “Jihad vs. McWorld.”
One of Wasserman's conclusions:
“...Optimistic, pragmatic, impatient, inventive, generous, Americans have refused to be held hostage to history, believing America to have burst its bounds. The cost of such myopia is large. It enfeebles understanding, promotes nostrums of all kinds, licenses the infantilization of public debate.”
