Maybe it was important, maybe not
That's not the point. The point is that Clinton's right wing political opponents hated him more than Bin Laden or Milosevic or Sadam Hussein and proved it time and again by not supporting his military actions. It is a very bad reflection on Clinton's persecutors that they chose the low road during times of national security.
