The ouster of the Taliban government and their replacement with a broad-based set-up being tailored by the United States and some other powers would lead to the creation of several autonomous regions in Afghanistan, former army chief Gen Mirza Aslam Beg warned on Tuesday.

Talking to Dawn here, he alleged that the designers and backers of the move wanted to attain the objectives of the Washington and Dushanbe plans.

He said their efforts would not prove fruitful. He recalled that efforts for a broad-based government had been launched immediately after the Jihadi commanders took over power following the withdrawal of Soviet forces from Afghanistan.

The US and Western governments, Gen Beg said, had tried their best to prevent the Mujahideen from strengthening their position in power. Forgetting the ground realities, he said, these powers wanted a broad-based government in Kabul which represented all ethnic communities living in the war-torn country.
