I have a different idea

I fully agree that terrorists are unlikely to try the same approach again. It didn't work on that flight that crashed in Pennsylvania because the passengers learned what had happened elsewhere that morning. It won't work in the future, either.

However, many people are scared and won't get on an airliner despite all reassurances and heightened security. Some have half jokingly suggested issuing the passengers stun guns. I think that's going a bit far. Instead of stun guns, give each passenger a baseball bat or ax handle. Anyone who tried to hijack the plane would be faced with an armed group of passengers set to give him a severe beating.

I reject the stun gun idea for a few practical reasons. First, they're expensive and need batteries. Second, it'd be my luck that some nervous granny would shoot me in the butt when all I was doing was going to the rest room. She might try to tap me with her bat but I can handle that. So, let's reassure the passengers that they would be able to fight back. Any hijacking attempt would resemble the mob scene in old Frankenstein movies, only without the pitchforks and flaming torches.

Tongue firmly in cheek.
