To have anything resembling an EU-type arrangement, all the Middle Eastern nations would have to have stable governments and mutual respect. The current I-hate-your-guts cameraderie there won't support that.
I hope some serious nation-building goes on after this phase of this war. Richard has been right: it's just the latest phase of the struggle to keep liberty and democracy alive as we blunder into the post-modern era.
