The United States would be better served if it went through an organization such as the United Nations to combat terrorism or formed something like the International Atomic Energy Agency, an group dedicated to safe uses of nuclear energy.
The course the United States has set out on in Afghanistan is “ill-advised and foolish” if the goal is to eradicate international terrorism, according to the head of the University of Georgia's Center for the Study of Global Issues.
“This will never work,” bluntly predicted Han Park, who has in the past acted as a behind-the-scenes negotiator for the U.S. government in talks with North Korea. “I don't think there's any scenario that could have been worse to fight international terrorism in the next few years.”
U.S. air strikes on Afghanistan, soon to be followed by ground troops, have two goals, he said.
“One is having justice be done, which is more short-term. The long-term objective is eradicating international organized terrorism. The two objectives are not necessarily mutually reinforcing.”
