Americans should remain on a high state of alert indefinitely.

FBI Director Robert Mueller on Friday said federal agents are pursing more than a thousand leads in the anthrax investigation, including more than a hundred that have taken agents overseas.

At a late morning press briefing, Mueller said the FBI has conducted more than 2,000 interviews to date, and more than 7,000 FBI agents are working on the combined Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and anthrax investigations.

"Over the past month, a number of private citizens and businesses have provided us with information, support and expertise and that is helping to move the anthrax investigation forward."

He expressed some disappointment that the $1 million reward offered for information about terror attacks has not resulted in more helpful information. "So far we have not received as many tips or leads under that program as we would like," he said.
