The embassy bombings all by themselves are good enough reasons to pursue El Qaeda.
I wonder too why it has taken this long. I suspect (and this is cynical of me) it was because the casualties in Kenya were mostly African. American citizens didn't get excited by this, but tut-tutted our way through it, sent mission workers with relief packages, etc., but there was no political pressure to act as long as we weren't the targets. Now we are.
