A best-selling French author thinks the US should bombard Afghanistan with mini-skirts and earrings not missiles.

Michel Houellebecq says Islamic extremism can be better beaten by corrupting its followers rather than by bombing them.

Mr Houellebecq, whose book The Elementary Particles sold 300,000 copies, previously caused controversy by labelling Islam "stupid."

He said: "The bombing is not an intelligent thing, as it won't fight religious extremism in that way. It would be better to corrupt the Muslims.

"I think that we really should drop mini-skirts and earrings, as that is Islam's real weakness."

Vivimilano reports that cult writer Mr Houellebecq made the comments while promoting his new book, Plateforme, in Milan.
