“I think it is very sad that Parliament should be rushing through a bill but not addressing the fundamental issue,” the leader of England's Catholics, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, told the BBC.
LONDON
European religious leaders condemned on moral grounds the cloning claims of an American company as the British Parliament attempted to rush through emergency legislation Tuesday to prevent a cloned human birth.
The cloning of an embryo was announced Sunday by Massachusetts-based Advanced Cell Technology and was called "morally wrong" by President Bush.
A top Vatican official, Monsignor Tarcisio Bertone, told Italian television Monday that ACT's stated aim of using cloning methods for research purposes does not justify the destruction of human beings. Vatican authorities issued a statement reaffirming the Catholic Church's stance against cloning.
"This calls for a calm but resolute appraisal which shows the moral gravity of this project and calls for unequivocal condemnation," the Vatican said in a statement.
