Sounds like he has the grounds for a slander lawsuit

and probably wrongful dismissal, too. I'm not a big fan of lawsuits as a rule but there are certainly legitimate ones. If the article is accurate, it sure sounds like he as a case to me. I'd sue those students and the school for everything they had.
