When the prisoners got weapons and started killing
They were no longer prisoners. They were combatants in combat. The unarmed and restrained prisoners could have easily been throwing themselves at the guards to block and cover the unrestrained.
The death cult aspect to the taliban/ObL is on full display here. these guys were in effect working hard for the Darwin award, and the human species is likely better off without whatever genetic condition contributed to their choices.
