Enron

Corporations don't police themselves. The market does that.

If corporations were the all-powerful monsters the left thinks they are, then why isn't Enron today a money-bloated colossus, striding the halls of Texas/Washington political power, in total control of the energy market?

Instead, the company is standing there in shock, a nice new sphincter having been ripped in their ass, while gas prices here in California hit new lows and our governor tries to figure out where in the heck he took a wrong turn as he pays gross prices for cheap energy. They screwed up, and their size is no shield.

The free market is like gravity. It always works.

Giant corporations going belly-up from their own incompetence and without one bit of government action are a sign that capitalism WORKS, not a sign of its failure. If we were really ruled by corporate power, Enron--which certainly should have plenty of pull in Washington--would not be in serious trouble. Look past the screeching about layoffs and stock price collapses, and look at the big picture.

The history of recent decades is a long list of mighty corporations brought low by the market and smaller competitors, who then rise to the top only to be brought low themselves. I can still remember my college days when the left thought the world would end up controlled by GM and IBM.
