It never had the chance, thank God, to become a real 'conspiracy'. No sane US President would have ever approved such crazy plans.

This is old history, but yes, it's good not to forget it. In the hot anti-communist passions of the Cold War, some military planners, who were asked to come up with possible Cuban invasion scenarios and justifications, well, it would be charitable to say that they went a little off the deep end...and did a great disservice to the American people.

The saddest part of the story is that this regrettable episode provides fodder for all kinds of nuts out there who want to see secret government conspiracies behind the Oklahoma City bombing, the Sep. 11th terrorist attacks, etc.
