More remains of firefighters pulled out of World Trade Center site

NEW YORK (AP) The bodies of 10 firefighters were pulled from the rubble of the World Trade Center on New Year's Day as the pace of recovery of victims appears to be increasing, a firefighters union spokesman said Wednesday.

Da Parma said the excavation of the disaster site is bringing workers to an area of the lobby where many people were trapped when the twin towers collapsed on Sept. 11.

''Those lower floors are now 30 feet below ground,'' Da Parma said. He said steel beams collapsed in such a way that pockets were left, and that's where many of the bodies are being found.

''A lot of firefighters just would not leave that area while people were still trying to get out,'' he said.

The bodies were draped in American flags and carried from the site by firefighters.
