My guess was that the stresses were damned up by the reapair-not allowing them to travel to the thicker attachment point. It looked like It failed above the repair but due to the age of the repair (which I couldn't find )that's probably not the case. Your idea of the loads being taken up by the other attachment points makes more sense.
