Pragmatics rather than ideology
Recall that the Taliban were able to consolidate power in Afghanistan primarily by restoring some semblence of law and order to the war-ravaged land. Many of the Taliban fighters were probably just locals who signed on with the repressive regime to this end (law and order) rather than buying into their peculiar notions of Islamic fundamentalism.
