Still Waiting On McAuliffe and Global Crossing...

Liberals have expressed astonishment that I could POSSIBLY think that the mainstream media has a liberal/Democratic bias, despite my beating them over the head with actual statistics. Let's see what they have to say about the Chairman of the Democratic National Committee sucking down $18 million from an investment of $100,000 in a failed company.

An online search of the news services produced these references (not counting the Drudge article):

From the conservative Washington Times, a thorough discussion of McAuliffe's profits, but this is to be expected from the Washington Times.

I found this interesting bit from Mother Jones Magazine, back from March, 2001. Mother Jones, far to the left of most Democrats, is probably no fan of any establishment politician. Following up on their "McAuliffe" link shows a whole lot of dirt digging on this guy. On the other hand, how many leftist publications would publish a discussion on "left wing fundamentalism?"

McAuliffe was apparently on the left's shitlist that March. Here's this from the New Republic (!)

Now let's check the mainstream news:

AP Financial had this story. Here is the sentence mentioning McAuliffe:

In the early days, Global Crossing attracted a distinguished set of investors, including former president George Bush and Terry McAuliffe, chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

That's it. Notice how George Bush Sr. is thrown into the sentence. Why? Were these the only two investors?

A search of ABC News for "McAuliffe" and "Global" returned one reference. I could not find a mention of McAuliffe in this article. The next reference returned was about the Challenger disaster.

CBS News just copied the AP report, and Frank has already pointed out how Dan Rather has spiked this.

Nothing at MSNBC.

Nothing at CNN.

O'Reilly at Fox News, of course, ran with it.

Favorite quote in O'Reilly's article from today's apparent winner of the "Closet Republican Award":

TERRY MCAULIFFE, CHAIRMAN, DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE: "I invested in many companies, and I'm happy this one worked. This is capitalism. You invest in stock, it goes up, it goes down. You know, if you don't like capitalism, you don't like making money with stock, move to Cuba or China."

Can we tattoo that on his forehead, so when he is screaming about the Evil Rich and wealthy Republicans, we can all read it?

The New York Times comes up with this:

The company had attracted many notable business and political figures as investors, including Terry McAuliffe, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, who profited by selling Global Crossing stock before it declined.

That's pretty much it. If I had a week to kill, I could list the stories shoving the Enron crisis into the face of George W. Bush and his administration, but I think I've made my point on the media's agenda.

No doubt if I looked Dan Rather in the eye and confronted him on this, he would look right back and say, "This isn't a real story."

Does anyone doubt that if a prominent Republican had made $18 million from a collapsed company that it would be on the lips of every newsman on the East Coast?
