I saw a documentary years ago about the Canadian peacekeeping operations in Europe...digging out and disposing of landmines was apparently every bit as awful as it sounds. There's a phrase for a fictional decoration given to someone who had serious trouble with the process: the Order of the Pink Mist.
(Perhaps it was "Purple Mist," I can't recall, but you get the idea. I also don't know whether it was coined by the Canadians or whether it's seen broader usage...any of you with military experience know?)
