Current Events » in reply to Even worse...

A tough one.

With all due respect, and that is a bit, I think it would make sense to know more. This is just one aspect of your thoughtful post, but to go into the others right now would be flogging that poor dead horse to mincemeat.

"Of those surveyed, 67 percent saw the September 11 attacks as morally unjustified, while 15 percent of the respondents said they were morally justified. But 77 percent said the U.S. military action in Afghanistan was morally unjustified, compared with 9 percent who said it was morally justified."

What information did the people who were asked these questions have? Was it identical to that I have? If different, how different?
Were they responding to the entire effort to eradicate terrorism, or to specific bombings which took out civilians? For instance, the question could have been - "Do you think the US is morally justified in killing non-combatant men, women and children in their war against terrorism?"

A "No", or "Hell, no!!" could be reported by a Geraldo Rivera very solemnly as "On this hallowed ground, consecrated by the blood of American soldiers, a majority, a large majority, of Muslims report that the efforts of the US to save the world from terrorism is morally unjustified. That's right, morally unjustified!!" (Followed by "And you wonder why I wear a pistol when on-camera!!!")

Another reporter could have said, with complete justification, that the vast majority of Muslims surveyed said that it was not morally justified to kill innocent civilians in the pursuit of political ends NO MATTER WHO DID IT.

What exactly is "moral justification" in their culture? Is there anything lost in translating that phrase?

Finally, although I'm aware this is a lost cause in this venue, I believe, in my heart of hearts, to the depths of my soul (not very deep, that soul, but you get the idea) that it would do the US a lot of good to find out exactly why people responded the way they did. How could that hurt us? From THEIR point of view, are there some legitimate reasons which would cost US little or nothing to correct?

And, they may just be bad, mean and evil to the core.
