My friend has no sense of being a victim, thinks he has a rich, rewarding life (and I agree) and that being deaf has advantages. They have developed a life and culture which they wouldn't want to give up.

Some recovering alcoholics have a similar sense. If they could drink, they wouldn't because the rewards of having to recover are too high.
