Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain...

This whole thing was political from the beginning. The Enron thing was an attempt to paint Bush with the Brush of Corruption, and it failed miserably. Then with Global Crossing and everything else coming into it, the Brush began to get paint on a lot of Democrats and other politicians who weren't expecting it. What you are seeing now is an attempt to cover the mess and clean it up before anyone notices where the paint went.

If Enron and AA can be blown up big enough and enough noise made about them, then maybe no one will remember who was on the receiving end of all the bribes.

It takes two people to be corrupt: the briber and the recipient. Somehow, when corporate influence and campaign finance problems are discussed, no one ever mentions the role of the politician, who really controls the whole thing to begin with,

To destroy political corruption, all the politician would have to do is say no. Somehow, when they're making indignant speeches about corruption and campaign finance law, this simple fact never comes up.
