From your post:
"Targeting the soul. The logic behind Arafat's ruthless method is easily seen. In the cold calculus, the balance of casualties now runs 3 to 1–in 18 months, 1,200 Palestinians have been killed for 370 Israelis. In the first intifada, which erupted in 1987 when Arafat was still away from the land, the ratio had been 25 to 1."
(The author seems to say that a 3 to 1 loss ratio is regarded as a great thing.)
Read those numbers, and realize the heavier losses are from the civilian side without an army, the lighter from the side with an Army of occupation.
I would think that almost anyone could realize the civilians, to endure such losses, must feel some grievance. And that the side with the Army shows no restraint when attacking a civilian population.
Frankly, up until the recent difficulties, the Palestinians were suffering 25 to 1 losses. What does a slaughter look like? Why do the Palestinians continue their struggle while enduring such losses? Why struggle against an occupying Army at all? Would you, if the US were occupied?
And, which side as an acknowledged war crimes perpetrator as their elected leader?
Now, when everyone is wrong, no one is right, and this is clearly a demonstration evil generating evil. While the Israelis have legitimate grievances, the Palestinians, just judging from the numbers in your citation, clearly have their legitimate grievances, too.
