Statistics

FYI: no real comments. Feel free to check the math--I added it up by hand.

Just FYI. Don't know how accurate it is. The source is Israeli, but it sounds like Israelis sympathetic to the Palestinians. On the other hand, the famous 12-year-old boy is listed as killed by Palestinians. On the third hand, the sentence that mentions this is cryptic at best--I read it four times and still don't quite understand it. There may be a typo in there somewhere.

For the current Intifada, Sept. 2000 to March 2002:

I count 1,087 Palestinians killed as a direct result of Israeli action, of which 222 were members of Palestinian security forces.

I count 362 Israelis killed as a direct result of Palestinian action, of which 109 were members of Israeli security forces.

I did not count those killed by their own side--37 Palestinians, and no Israelis.

These numbers are close enough to the ones given in the article, and in fact the ratio of my number is almost exactly 3 to 1.

Now, the numbers from 1987 until the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993:

1,160 Palestinians killed as a result of Israeli action. At this time, there was no official Palestinian security force, so they would all be civilians. This is only 73 more than the current Intifadah.

113 Israelis killed by Palestinians.

This is actually closer to 10 to 1 than 25 to 1. I don't know where the 25 to 1 number came from. Maybe there were different assumptions made. Maybe I made a math mistake. And of course, this is over 6 or so years instead of the year and a half of the current war, so both sides are obviously getting a lot better at killing each other.

In any case, the decreased ratio for the modern war is not so much due to fewer Palestinians dying, but to the Palestinians getting better at killing Israelis.
