It would be great to get back to the original Earth Day concept of cleaning up rivers, reducing pollution, and making industry more compatible with the rest of us breathing the same air. The idea back then was cleaner industries, not "no industries."
Not sure what the "business lobby's line" is. It goes without saying that their input on pollution laws has to be closely examined, like anyone else's who has an interest in the outcome.
However, with them, it's survival. Inappropriate or downright stupid environmental rules can destroy a business. What risks do environmentalists take when they propose a law? If a law screws up, are the environmentalists held responsible? Do environmental groups have to cough up for the costs of what they propose? Are EPA people being jailed, or even fired, over the MTBE fiasco?
Although there are some less-than-capitalist businesses trying to use government to gain power and money and destroy their competition, most businesses work full time interacting with government for one reason: to keep the government from destroying them.
