Re: Ah, freedom!

Suppose the people are unhappy about the noise, the pollution level, the costs of expanding the highway and the never ending traffic jams...As they are all infringing their own freedom.
What if much more effective solutions would be to forbid trucks on any other lane but the right one, or forbid them completely at certain times? What if it would be interesting to build a HST (TGV) track instead of enlarging the highway?
In Antwerp, for instance, authorities are doing all they can to make life more miserable to drivers and more interesting to bikers. It works...I bought a bike, long ago.
What is freedom, exactly? To do anything you want as long as it doesn't interefere with other's right to freedom? But this seriously limits it anyway!
An english woman who is completely paralyzed wanted to ask permission to a court in england for her husband to put an end to her misery: refused; then she went to the European Court, asked the same which was also refused. She can't choose her death.
I've often wondered about the settlers in the new world; they left a country where they felt their need for freedom wasn't respected, but in order to survive in the wild west, they needed to follow a whole new way of life, and respect all kinds of rules anyway.
We need people to grow and thrive but those people are also limiting our freedom.
Perhaps, to know and understand what to expect is more important than to absolutely want maximum freedom.
