Re: Can the US learn from Sharon?

The assumption you are making is apparently that the Palestinians deliberately stopped the suicide bombing out of the goodness of their hearts for four weeks, in hopes that the Israelis would become nice folks and pull out of the West Bank.

Another conclusion is possible: that Sharon and the Israeli army ripped the guts out of the terrorist infrastructure, disorganizing and disassembling it to the point where the bombings were no longer feasible. They pulled out, everything started up again.

These bombers are not lone looneys like the pipe bomb boy. These bombs are not amateur efforts. They are not built by the suicide bombers. They are constructed by demolition experts, and the bombs delivered to the suicide bomber who is then assigned a target by his superiors. Such an organization can be disrupted, and I believe it was for four weeks.

You are right that you can't wipe out all forms of terrorism permanently. But like Al Quaeda and the Taliban, and like the Palestinian terror organization, and like Iraq for that matter, you can disrupt and destroy highly organized nationalist terror efforts. This will maybe still leave the lone nuts, like the pipe bomb guy or Timothy McVeigh, but at least it's a long ways better than nothing.
