Double agents do exist, and to a co-worker it might appear that a double agent was a single agent involved in espionage.
Or, the individual might be involved in espionage, but being fed false of misleading information to feed to his/her handlers.
It wouldn't suprize me at all if the FBI were involved in this type of spy game. In fact, it would be a shame if they wern't using every tool in the book to get information and then using that information to get even deeper information.
