Taking friendly fire is an inevitable consequence of high altitude bombing, or even strafing for that matter.
My outfit was fired on in Nam by Army gunships all the time. On one occassion we were on a hill near the Qua Viet River, in a firefight with a battalion of gooks, and these bozos hovered over us with their spotlights on us.
Some of our guys shot their lights out and they promptly got the hell out of there. They had to know it was us, because we used red tracers and the gooks used green ones.
All in a day's work...
