Therefore, it's also obvious that people in the US have been getting a biased look at the Middle East for a long, long time, in ways Europe hasn't. They have clearly been getting a less biased picture.

Although I find it difficult to claim that our media does NOT present a biased picture, no way do I believe that the Euro outlets are more reality based. Maybe because I see different biases and sources of bias than you do. What has worked to overcome much of the traditional news bias is cable TV and especially the web with it's world access to news outlets. No longer can the NY Times, ABC News and other media oligopolies control what is or is not reported. If they chose not to cover stuff for PC reasons or advertiser bias pressure, somebody else will let the meowser outa the bag. Sure, new and different bias is introduced but now access to all information is available throught the west and much of the east.
