Here's an Arab self-assessment of some of the roots of the current situation.
Basicly, Islamists are trying to do today what Christian religious ideolog societies tried to do 500-1,000 years ago. Problem is...that rest of the societies have moved on. It's the 21st century. They have to face the unpleasant and difficult fact that their religious based society has held them back and kept them (the average Arab Muslim family) from advancing economically with the rest of the world.
