Re: Collateral Damage, not!

It is easy to pass judgment from the comfort of a lefty journalist's desk - it is easy to believe the reporter and his story is all true. It is easy to believe that body parts are being collected in buckets and that the village was Taliban-free and full of non-combatants.

However, it is not necessarily true - every word can be a fabricated tale handed down as a form of propaganda.
I could write an equally compelling tale of event in the WTC and the carnage later discovered.

The NYT has been passing propaganda for many years now - there track record as liars and falsifiers is well documented.

We don't intend to lose wars anymore - so unlike the CIA agent shot by a child at point blank range, responding to his asking for help - we are NOT going to knock politely on the doors of suspected terrorists and hand them a writ.

If the Afghans give false information - and condemn their fellow tribes to attack because of their own prejudice and ignorance - the US is not in a position to always determine the guilt or innocence of some godforsaken village in Taliban-country.

No one wants to kill innocents. No gunship captain is going "Yahoo" as he let's the guns roll - those types are weeded out now. It is not Vietnam where when folks are drafted you get some sadists in the mix - but instead today's army is very professional - they do a job. They are not emotion-free but they are professional combatants.

I don't think any of them will come back home and want to blow up buildings out of revenge or hopelessness. They are not going to be treated like heck either by most Americans. The left however, probably will try to stigmatize them - but will be unsucessful. Just as the Desert Storm troops could never be slandered by the left as they would have liked.

For every story (real or fabricated) about the US being the bad cowboy - the US is giving a whole other group of Afghans a whole new life, education and decent food. A whole new breed of Afghan men and women will emerge from the rubble and will be more intelligent than any Afghan in decades. But this is all overlooked. Only bad news is worth discussing when talking about Afghanistan.

The number of Afghan combatants, Taliban and Al Quaeda who have died as a result of US occupation - is far lower than the number who would have been spared death by exposure, hunger or execution by the former repressive Taliban regime.

Afghanistan had the lowest form of fundamentalist government, the highest infant mortality rate and the highest execution rate for petty crimes, and the highest crimes against (and execution of) women of anywhere in the world. It was hell on earth.

It is always darkest before the dawn - and the sun is now rising for Afghanistan.

Until war can be waged without killing people - there will always be tragedies, heartache and bloodshed.
