"I realize the Left is still flailing around like a beached fish trying to hit Bush with something--ANYTHING--that could wreck his presidency"
Gee, whiz. Looking for reasons?
How about needing confidence in our stock market, an even playing field for investors? I mean, for our system to work, we need to have confidence in the economic basis of our system. Given the recent events, the US needs and deserves moral leadership to restore confidence in "the system".
You know, and I know that GWB used insider information, was crooked in divulging what he did, lied about it, and still does, but continues to refuse to divulge all the information in the matter.
It's clear he is unable to offer moral leadership to the country in the matter of the domestic economy. He's as bad as any of them. Gonna get morally relativistic? Isn't $500,000 significant? (Character counts, remember? It did then, and does now.)
How about Cheney? We all know he deceived investors, and got $24 million as a good-will, going away present. Moral leadership? Nope. (See above re character.) He's hiding from questions. It's not "national security", he poked around a lot since 9-11. I saw him on the Sunday morning programs, before the Halliburton stuff leaked. Maybe he's sick from worry, and hiding that, too.
How about civil rights? It doesn't scare conservatives (or, apparently, some "libertarians") that a citizen can be held indefinitely without charges without ever having done anything, without ever putting on a uniform or grabbing a gun. It doesn't scare conservatives for the government to try to create a system of millions of informers?
Stack on top of that the refusal of the Attorney General of the United States of America not allowing gun purchase checks of suspected terrorists? Who is more important - your average citizen who doesn't want to get shot, burned or blown up, or the NRA?
Nope, there are those who think that just plain "greed" is OK but don't worship at the altar of Raw Greed and need to trust the system for it to work.
There are those who think that "civil rights" means the king, whoops, the government can't just come along and throw you in the clink at will.
This guy has done enough to wreck several presidencies. With a little help from his friends.

Nope - constitutional crisis.
