No building is permanent, Bowser (you might have been told otherwise -- sorry about that), so demolition must be in the plans, particularly for high-rise structures. And for something the size and mass of the Twins, it would have been physically impossible for them to come down any other way.
Also:
Actually, one of them did start to lean before coming down. The outside vertical structural members can be seen blowing out, the top section leans, and then it comes straight down.
