Once again Bush hands the Democrats an axe and then stretches his own neck out. The only reason there has been grief about this subject is because there is political hay to be made here.

Bush has been quite consistent about reaching a hand out to the Democrats and pulling back a bloody stump. If nothing else, he gives the impression of being a slow learner.

If your political opposition is screaming like a banshee, with their veins bulging in outrage and accusing you of being the worst human being ever to come down the pike...

Then you are almost certainly doing exactly the right thing. It's when they say you have "grown in the office" that the alarm bells should go off.
