...and fewer in the middle, then it's fact, not dogma. At the times when the middle grows in proportion to the poor and the wealthy, it's just inappropriate -- it's still not dogma.
Note that the "old saw" that you quote does not specify that one is the cause and one is the effect. And anyway, I thought it was children that the poor got.
