One guy pays his own way overseas, lives on crackers and whatall in some lousy cave with a ragtag bunch of folks being bombed by B-52s, wears sandals and damn near starves.

Another guy joins the Air Force, has the government spend a million dollars to teach him to fly an airplane, and then goes AWOL.

Is there any moral equivalence here? Don't folks AWOL in time of war or conflict usually, unless their Daddy is influential, get into some sort of trouble? (But that doesn't matter if you're conservative, does it. No conservative is ever accountable, just a poor victim roaming the landscape seeking revenge.)
